106 Commercial Street - Identity_Drum Shop

What was this project about ?

This project was about designing an instrument shop inspired by a song and a singer.

I chose Lily Allen’s `Fuck You`, because it’s defiant and anarchic vibe matches well with where the site is in East London. For the instrument, I chose a drum kit since the beat of the song is strong and large portion of the song’s characteristic bases on the beat and the repetitive lyric.

Her strong mind of `Let’s do not mind all those negative things to realise the ideal worlds` was undeniably attractive and powerfully approached to me.

Keeping her thought in the song in my mind, I thought, in the ideal world, all the human activities must not harm the nature and it became the main ethos for the project.

The interior space is layered by the new walls made out of reclaimed scaffolding boards. It provides a completely separated environment from the outside. It is for helping visitors focusing on playing and experiencing drums.

The testing place inserted through the upper level of the building on the left side. To enhance the experience of playing a drum kit, the structure helps the sounds resonate inside

the structure. But at the same time, blocking the vibration to the existing building.
